MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT

The Annual General Meeting of the Maroubra & Districts Chamber of Commerce will be held at Boland Funerals, 29 Maroubra Road at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 4 March 2008.

One of the most important items on the Agenda is the election of the new Executive Committee.

The current Committee is comprised of Richard Walsh (President and Public Officer), Kyriacos Mavrolefteros (Vice President),  David Shannon (Treasurer),  Patricia Collier (Minutes Secretary),  Patrick Lim (Bulletin Editor),  Andrew Clarke (Bulletin Distribution), Andrew Zannettides and Shirley Struck.

Richard Walsh has indicated he will not be available for re-election as President.  Tracey Jackson, has indicated she may be prepared to take on this role on an interim basis (see more below).  Tracey is the Centre Manager of JobFind Maroubra.  She is  very energetic and capable, and I warmly commend her for your consideration.  I regret that my own commitments preclude me from offering to serve as President at this time.  I am however prepared to continue as Vice-President if re-elected.  So far David Shannon, Patricia Collier and Andrew Clarke have indicated their willingness to continue on the Committee if re-elected.  I am hoping that the other members of the current committee will also make themselves available for re-election, and that we will receive additional nominations to bring new energy to the Committee.  Under our Consitution Richard Walsh will continue ex-officio as a member of the Committee as Immediate Past President.

Richard has been the main energy source for the Chamber in recent years.  Under his leadership, the Chamber has made some outstanding contributions to the Maroubra business community.  One of the most notable has been our continuing succcess in opposing the installation of parking meters in the area.  Richard has also played a leading role in organizing the annual community Fun Run and the monthly Chamber “Gatherings” for local business networking.

Our AGM has traditionally been held in February.  However, under our Constitution, our Financial Year ends on 30 June, and our AGM should be held not later than 31 October.  Technically, our meeting on 4 March will be for the Financial Year ending 30 June 2007.  Nevertheless, our reports to the meeting will also cover the 6 months to 31 December 2007.

At this stage Tracey Jackson is only prepared to serve as President on an interim basis, until the FY08 AGM.   At the meeting on 4 March Tracey will lead a discussion on future directions for the Chamber, and in particular the possibilities for further enhancing its function as a local business network.   If elected, Tracey would propose to use the next few months to explore possibilities for establishing a more energetic business plan and a more even distribution of the workload within the Executive Committee..

Our Chamber is one of the oldest  in the State.  It is in very good shape financially, and with Richard’s departure it is vital that we find the best possible executive team to maintain the good work of past years.  For all of these reasons, the meeting on Tuesday 4 March will be especially important.  Please attend if you possibly can – and please let me know if you would be interested in serving on the Executive Committee or if you wish to nominate any other candidates for consideration.

Sincerely,

Kyriacos Mavroldfteros

Vice-President
